My work as an artist is rooted in nature. My recent work focuses on trees as a metaphor for the importance of family in my life, those with us and those who have departed. They represent the relationships and memories we hold dear to our hearts.
In the artwork below, titled, “Who Are We?,” it was my intent to reference the times we are living in. Trees are representative of generations over time. They are strong and can withstand harsh conditions. They provide us healing as well as symbolize our connections to everything around us. Within the branches of the tree, which is overlaid with a partial view of the American flag, I have embedded words that represent traits of character and leadership…Integrity, Respect, Empathy, Truth, Responsibility, and Honor to name a few…
These character traits represent the ideals of an honorable life that I believe that most of us as Americans, and as humans, strive to live up to and attain. They are also values that most of us try to instill in our children.
Who are we? I’ve been asking myself this a lot lately…
